Rainbow Trout
When you hook a Rainbow Trout
be ready for a fight. Revered for it's beauty and sport, you can
find these trout in rivers, streams and lakes. They will strike all
kinds of bait. From lures, worms, fish eggs, dry fly's, wet fly's,
corn, grasshoppers, marshmallows, pretty well anything that looks
good to eat. Get the bait down where the fish are, early morning
they may be near the surface but most times you can find them in
colder, faster stream/river or deeper lake pond water. Some people
refer to them as Steelhead as well, many are found in the Great
Lakes.
Lake Trout
Another great sport fish found throughout the world and in the
North American Great Lakes cold, clean water. They are great
fighters and most times of the year are found with down-riggers and
extra equipment. In the spring they spend some time near the
surface and can be caught with a fly, jigging with lures and
herring or minnow. Great tasting fish, a delicacy if you are lucky
enough to have some. Check your local markets for a local fish
monger to see if they have some of this fresh or fresh smoked. In
Canada I personally have sampled some incredible candied trout,
smoked with local maple wood and maple syrup!
Brook Trout
The holy grail of trout fishing, the
brook trout or speckled trout is becoming more difficult to find.
It prefers cold, clean water free from pollution. Deep pools where
they can rest and fast water runs were they can travel, hide, eat.
One of the most exciting ways to catch a brookie is on a fly rod. A
light line and tacke can make even a small brook trout an amazing
fishing experience. You must be very careful not to let them know
you are nearby. Any sign of trouble and they are gone.
Sneak up with a dry fly floating by them a BANG, you have a rare
fish on! Unless you are catching many of them(lots in the area),
let them go so they can attempt to survive a little while longer
and fight another day. :)
Brown Trout
The Brown Trout is of European descent imported into North American
and can be found in Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. Similar to the
Lake Trout they like lures, fish eggs, worms and fly's. Stocky with
a silver sheen the Brown Trout is another great sport fish that can
be caught right from shore. You don't need big fancy boats and
expensive equipment to catch most trout species, they are a great
sport fish!
